Promontory Club

Nestled on more than 7,200 acres, Promontory Club is a top–tier, private recreational second-home, mountain community in the heart of the Rocky Mountains near Park City, Utah.

“We are situated on a series of hills, looking west into Park City with a view of the three ski resorts, Canyons Resort, Deer Valley Resort and Park City Mountain Resort,” says Managing Director Rich Sonntag. “The Utah Olympic Park, home of the 2002 Olympic Games, is also visible. It is quite a unique position.”

Promontory’s unique mountain ranch setting of more than 11 square miles offers diverse year-round recreational amenities and activities for the multigenerational family. 

Major Amenities

Promontory includes an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus signature golf course as well as the Pete Dye Canyon Course, an equestrian center, kids cabin, Deer Valley Alpine Ski Lodge, athletic clubhouse and spa with tennis center. The Promontory Club is presently constructing a new golf clubhouse for the Nicklaus Course, which will open for the 2015 golf season.

Last year Promontory Club opened a 16,000-square-foot building known as The Shed. It was created as a contemporary interpretation of an old mining shed. The design was guided by the use of rugged, timeless materials with a color pallet that connects the building to its surroundings, the company says. Using common materials in uncommon ways is a hallmark of The Shed design by the architects and interior designers, according to the Promontory Club. Shed amenities include a casual dining room, family dining, soda fountain, billiards and game room, 50-seat movie theater, a two-lane bowling alley, a indoor basketball arena, an arts and crafts studio, a spacious view deck with spectacular vistas and an outdoor amphitheater with seating for 500.

Former Ranch

Promontory Club is located on the site of a former cattle and sheep ranch. After more than 150 years of agriculture on the site, the family ranch defaulted and the property became bank owned in 1980. A Phoenix, Ariz., developer then obtained the property and started development in 1999. The sale of the first lot was competed in 2002.  

There are currently 375 completed homes onsite with more than 800 homesites sold.  Most homesites are priced between $350,000 and between $350,000 and the low $1 millions averaging over $500,000. Promontory Club plans for a total of 1,900 homes.  There are 54 now under construction.

Promontory’s developer builds two series of cabins, which cluster in villages near the club amenities. The smaller series of Trappers Cabins range from about 2,200 to 4,500 square feet and are priced between $135,000 to $1 million. A second larger series of developer-built cabins ranges from 3,600 square feet to 4,500 square feet and prices for these currently range from 1.4 million to about $2 million. Both of these cabin series feature a high level of finishes, great views and proximity to club amenities. For others, the developer sells custom homesites, ranging from just over a half-acre to several acres, on which, the owners secure their own architects and builders to create custom homes of 2,500 to 8,000 square feet. “For their first house, many people have to choose a place close to their work or school. Now, for their second home, they can express all their pent-up imagination for really creative home,” Sonntag says. Examples include concept homes built into the hillside, a home built in the shape of the infinity symbol or homes with grass or zinc roofs designed by famous architects.

The community is ideal for a multigenerational family’s summer home, and many find themselves spending more time there in the fall and spring as well as winter ski seasons, he adds.
