Building is in Chris Hilsman’s blood. His father and grandfather built every structure on the family’s dairy farm with their own hands, and when Hilsman’s father finally decided to get out of the dairy business in the early 1980s, homebuilding was a natural progression. Hilsman worked for his father’s company on and off for many years before he ended up in the commercial construction business, but that changed once he visited a friend in Colorado and was offered the opportunity to build custom homes. Hilsman says he fell in love with the challenge and creativity of building custom homes, and that inspired him to found Pilot Builders in 1997.

From design to the day it turns over the keys of a brand-new house, Payne Family Homes puts itself in the shoes of the homeowner throughout the entire building process. Payne Family Homes builds modern houses in the St. Louis and St. Charles county areas of Missouri. The company has been named one of the top-25 growing companies in St. Louis the past three consecutive years and it credits that growth to knowing where today’s homeowners live and how they want to live.

Nova Scotia-based Lloyoll Custom Building started out in 2002, providing timber framing and structural packages to developers and homeowners. But after years of focus on structural work, the firm branched out into fine finishing, planning and consulting and eventually offering warrantied project management services.

Now, the company is offering specialized niche work with a new subsidiary business, Coastal Concrete Works, which provides decorative concrete, as a complement to its now thriving full-service custom homebuilding outfit.

For more than 25 years, KOSL Building Group has created mansions in Scarsdale, Rye and Larchmont, N.Y.; and Greenwich, Conn.

“These are big, expensive homes,” Owner Bobby Ben-Simon says. “They are the highest quality you can imagine in a single-family residence.”

The homes are designed in vintage styles recalling the early 1900s. “I’m a big fan of 1900s-era construction,” Ben-Simon says. “They are great quality homes and that is the model of my homes. They are very traditional with extensive molding and trim inside and out.”

When some homebuilders open their doors, they are forced to build in upper-end neighborhoods due to lot availability. Homes By Taber was able to go in the opposite direction, Owner Taber Leblanc says.

Based in Oklahoma City, Homes By Taber constructs affordable homes throughout its home state. Leblanc started the business in 2000, after working for an insurance company. Thanks to his job, “I had some construction knowledge from being an insurance adjuster working water, fire and hail claims,” he recalls.

George Goodwyn Jr., president of Goodwyn Building Co. Inc., states that his mission is to design, build and sell new homes that will retain and gain value for their homeowners. “It is our responsibility to efficiently and purposefully utilize the God-given talent of skilled carpenters, laborers and subcontractors to build the highest-quality home for the least amount of money and to perform our tasks in a way that is pleasing to God,” Goodwyn maintains.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Goodwyn homes are built to last. The company strives to make its homes energy-efficient enough that they will obtain the lowest-possible power bill. Goodwyn Building Co. Inc. says it builds more Energy Star-approved homes than any other builder in the Montgomery, Ala., area.

Anyone who has ever done it will confirm that there are few things as satisfying as building a house with your own hands. That’s why Glenn Foster and his son Richard left behind successful careers in the healthcare and financial sectors to form Foster Signature Homes in 2006. Today, Foster Signature Homes is one of the most sought-after and successful builders of custom homes in the Oklahoma City metropolitan market, and Richard Foster says that is due to the fact that the company refuses to cut corners no matter what price point it builds in, as well as its ability to work closely with customers in a way that makes them feel comfortable.

F C Batton and Son Inc. has already demonstrated a knack for longevity, having provided service to the Baltimore area since 1902. Today, President Rick Batton and Vice President Kyle Batton are the fourth and fifth generations, respectively, of the Batton family to operate a company started by Rick Batton’s great-grandfather.

The Batton’s are still modeling the way they run things based on the success of their predecessors. All generations of Batton’s have sought to provide outstanding quality for a fair price and having the experience to bring a project to completion within schedule and budget.
